*Rita Sauer

Since I arrived 5 days ago I study often at the ECBM in the evening. Until now I visited Buckingham Palace, Green Park, St. James Park, Harrod’s and a pub in Redbridge where I’ve sung some karaoke with two students from Brazil and Japan which also live in the house of my Portuguese host family.

Before I arrived I already knew that London is much bigger than Bremen or other cities but I never expected that it is a city with living with living at high speed. Everything is larger and faster than anything I’ve ever seen before. But I love it and I am still looking forward to have an amazing time in a really amazing city.

*Paul Sommer

I arrived this Saturday and so far I really enjoyed my time here in London. The family I stay with is very nice. I got my own bathroom. The courses we already had were quite interesting. A teacher gave us a very detailed and deep view on logistics.

*Tina Mustermann

It’s my first time in London and at home I live in a little village so the big city is something very special for me. Actually I think London is a very hectic and stressful city. It is way to much traffic over here and nearly everything is different than it is in Germany (e.g. cars drive on the “wrong” side). I really enjoy the time with my friends when we go to a pub or a restaurant.

I miss the German food especially meals which are cooked by my Mum. I think all the teachers here in the college are very nice and helpful. This visit in London is a very helpful experience and it is easy to improve one’s English. One thing that has to be changed in London is the tubes depart after 12 pm.

*Tatjana Meier

It’s my first time in London and my first time to spend three weeks alone in a foreign family. My host family is very nice and I like the food that they cook. It is a nice experience to live with them and see new things all the time. One thing I don’t like is the traffic in London. There are so many cars and people on the street so that you have to be careful all the time.

Next Tuesday we want to go to a musical which is called Mama Mia. We also spent a lot of time in a pub close to South Woodford Station.

Regarding the ECBM I think it’s a really good place to study and the teachers are very competent and friendly. After all I like to stay in London and maybe I want to come back to see more lovely places.

*names changed by the ECBM

Work placement Report

We are two trainees from Germany who are currently doing a work placement at the European College of Business and Management in London, England.

First of all, there is Julia who lives near Marburg and is 20 years old. She is training to become an administrative assistant for foreign languages at the “Kaufmännische Schulen der Universitätsstadt Marburg”. Her training includes a 5-week work placement abroad, following a one-week language course. This work placement is financially supported by the “Leonardo Da Vinci” organisation. She decided to come to London because she is really interested in the British culture and London as one of Europe’s metropolises.

Finally there is Franziska who is from Berlin and 20 years old. She is doing an apprenticeship as foreign language correspondence clerk at the Friedrich-List-Schule in Berlin. She was offered a 4-week work placement by the organisation Xarxa which offers work placement all over Europe. She decided on London because she has never been to England before, so she saw it as chance to improve her English and to learn about the British way of life.

The college is situated close to Old Street Station and Liverpool Street Station. To get there Franziska has to take the tube which is always crowded. It is very unusual to snatch a seat in the tube and it is so full that you can hardly breathe. Julia has to take the bus but the situation is a little bit better.

A usual working day starts at 9 am. Both work in the Marketing Department and our Line Manager is called Juliana. What we are actually doing is to advertise the BA and MBA programmes of the ECBM. Furthermore we have to do so-called “rotas”: taking calls and receiving visitors at the reception, collecting mail and checking the classrooms. Due to the advertising concept, we have to translate articles (publish them on the website or use them for the German/English newsletter),create presentations for potential future students and we carry out case studies to find out what former students are doing now in order to use this material for marketing procedures. All employees are very friendly and open-minded and we can ask them questions at any time. This work placement is a great experience for us and it was a great chance to achieve work experience, improve our English and discover London. We can also make out the differences between the working atmosphere in the UK and Germany.
